Why Commercial Properties Should Upgrade to Modern Digital Locks

December 21, 2025

Managing access in a commercial building with traditional keys creates real problems: keys get copied, lost, or passed along to people who no longer work there. Digital locks solve these problems without requiring a full security overhaul.

What Digital Locks Actually Are

Digital locks replace the physical key with a different credential. Depending on the system, employees can enter using:

  • PIN keypads: type a code to unlock
  • Smart cards or key fobs: tap or swipe to enter
  • Mobile apps via Bluetooth: use a phone as the credential
  • Biometrics: fingerprint or facial recognition for high-security zones

Each type fits different use cases. A warehouse loading dock might use a keypad; a server room might use biometrics. Most modern systems support multiple credential types on the same hardware.

Five Practical Reasons to Upgrade

1. Lost Credentials Are Easy to Revoke

With traditional keys, losing one means rekeying the entire lock and notifying every keyholder. With digital systems, a lost code or deactivated card is disabled in seconds from the management console. No hardware change needed.

2. Granular Access Control

Managers can assign exactly who enters which door and during which hours. A cleaning crew might have access only between 6pm and 9pm. A contractor gets a temporary code that expires automatically. Restricted areas (storage, server rooms, cash handling) stay off-limits to everyone else without any additional work.

3. Entry Logs

Every entry is recorded: who entered, which door, what time. If inventory goes missing or a restricted area is accessed, the log narrows down what happened immediately. Traditional locks offer no equivalent record.

4. Harder to Defeat Physically

Quality digital deadbolts resist picking and bump attacks. Many also integrate with existing alarm and camera systems, so a forced-entry attempt triggers an alert rather than going unnoticed until the next morning.

5. Long-Term Cost Savings

The upfront cost is higher than a standard deadbolt, but ongoing rekeying and lockout expenses drop. How quickly that pays off depends on your staff turnover and the size of the facility.

Choosing the Right System

A few things to evaluate before buying:

  • Lock grade and certification: look for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 commercial-rated hardware, or UL-listed for higher-security applications
  • Integration: confirm the system works with your existing cameras, alarms, or building management software
  • Power backup: most digital locks run on batteries; verify backup behavior during power outages
  • Installation complexity: surface-mount and door-prep requirements vary; a professional installation ensures the lock seats correctly and the strike plate aligns

Common Concerns

“Digital locks can be hacked.” Modern commercial-grade systems use encrypted communication protocols. Realistic attack vectors are social engineering and weak PINs, not technical exploits. Require longer codes and rotate them after staff changes.

“They stop working when the power goes out.” Battery-powered locks operate independently of building power. Most give low-battery warnings weeks in advance, and many have emergency key cylinder backups.

“They’re complicated.” Most systems are simpler for day-to-day use than managing a physical key cabinet. The management software is web-based and takes an hour to learn.

Getting Started

For most commercial properties, the best first step is an assessment of which doors carry the most security risk and which access patterns cause the most friction. A locksmith familiar with commercial systems can recommend hardware that fits your door prep and integration requirements.
