Rekeying vs. Changing Locks: Which Option Fits Your Situation?

December 18, 2025

When you need to control who has access to your property, you have two main paths: rekey the existing locks or replace them entirely. Both solve the same core problem (old keys stop working), but they differ in cost, scope, and the right situations for each.

What Is Rekeying?

Rekeying means a locksmith removes the lock cylinder, replaces or rearranges the internal pin stack, and reassembles the lock so it operates with a completely new key. The hardware on the door stays in place. Anyone holding an old key can no longer open the lock.

Rekeying makes sense when:

  • You moved into a home and want to be certain no previous occupants, contractors, or neighbors have a working key.
  • A key was lost or stolen and you want access control restored quickly.
  • You want to set up a master key system so multiple locks operate from one key.
  • Your locks are in good mechanical condition and you simply need updated access.

Advantages: Lower cost than full replacement, faster to complete, no change to the door hardware or finish.

Limitations: Rekeying does not upgrade an old or low-grade lock. If the lock cylinder is worn, corroded, or lacks modern security features (anti-pick pins, anti-drill plates), the same vulnerabilities remain after rekeying.

What Is Changing (Replacing) a Lock?

Replacing a lock means removing the entire lock assembly from the door and installing new hardware. New keys are cut to the new lock; old keys are useless.

Replacing makes sense when:

  • The lock is worn, damaged, or malfunctioning.
  • Your current locks lack important security features and you want a meaningful upgrade.
  • A break-in occurred and the lock body sustained physical damage.
  • You want to change the lock’s style, finish, or brand to match a renovation.
  • You are switching to a smart lock or a higher-security grade.

Advantages: You control the quality and features of the new lock from the start. A new lock with anti-pick, anti-drill, or anti-snap features is a genuine security improvement, not just a key-access change.

Limitations: Higher cost due to new hardware, and installation takes longer.

Cost Considerations

Rekeying is the more affordable option because no new hardware is purchased. Replacing locks involves the cost of the lock itself plus labor, and higher-security locks carry a higher upfront price. That said, installing a quality lock once is more economical than repeatedly servicing a failing one. If a lock is already causing problems, replacement usually costs less over time than ongoing repairs.

Security Considerations

Rekeying stops old keys from working but does not change the physical resistance of the lock to attack. If your current locks are basic builder-grade hardware, rekeying keeps access control without improving resistance to picking, bumping, or forced entry. Replacing with a higher-grade lock addresses both issues at once.

If you have experienced a break-in, replacement is generally the right call even if the lock appears functional, as attempted forced entry can damage internal components in ways that are not obvious from the outside.

Quick Decision Guide

Choose rekeying if:

  • Your locks are in good working order.
  • You need quick access control after a key is lost or ownership changes.
  • Budget is the primary constraint.

Choose replacing if:

  • Locks are old, worn, or damaged.
  • You want better security features.
  • You had an attempted or actual break-in.
  • You are renovating or want matching hardware.
